How can I soften old towels?

Nov 17, 2020 How to keep towels soft & plush without using detergent or fabric softener. Using too much detergent and fabric softener. Storage caddy that can easily slot onto any shelf or in any space.

Get started with these 5 easy tips to make your old bath towels soft and new again!

1. Use Vinegar

The first way we can make our old towels like new is by looking at our old friend plain white distilled vinegar. Just toss your towels into the washing machine with a single cup of white vinegar and let it run. You will love the results just when you add a cup of vinegar!

If the vinegar scent is too much for you, just put the towels through another wash without the vinegar or another rinse cycle. Make sure you read my post on clever ways to use vinegar to save you money.

2. Wind Drying

The second way you can have softer towels is a rather old-fashioned method of drying your clothes. Just wait around for a nice, windy day and hang your clothes out on a clothesline outside.

Try mixing this drying method with the vinegar washing method; it just might make your towels even softer!

This is perfect with summer just around the corner. In fact, I do this with our beach towels all the time.

3. How to soften hard towels – Brush them

This next method is a little unorthodox, and it doesn’t involve washing or drying. Go and grab a big brush, maybe you can clean off your dog’s expensive pet-brush or you can grab the giant styling brush you got for your birthday, and lay your towel flat on a bed.

Using long strokes in one direction, brush the entire side of your towel, flip it over, and brush it again. If you did it right, your towels should be as soft as the day you bought them home.

This is a good time to get the kids involved. 🙂

4. How to soften towels with baking soda

Yep – Baking Soda. It is always there when we need you, especially when our towels have become stiffer than we could imagine. You can soften your towels with baking soda by mixing roughly a cup of baking soda in with your detergent before running the washing machine.

As an added bonus, considering baking soda’s reputation for making anything smell good, those sweaty, smelly towels will smell wonderful once again. Make sure you also read our post on ways to use baking soda and vinegar together.

5. How to soften towels in the wash – Use Tennis Balls

Now, this one may sound a little weird but it’s proven to be effective. Go out to your local sports supply store and buy a few tennis balls, and toss them in with your towels.

The slight bouncing of the balls will knock out lumps and fluff your towels a slight bit (You’ll still have to do some fluffing but, hey; they just softened up your towels for you…). If you’re willing to shell out a little bit more money, you can always go out and buy a couple of dryer balls for even softer towels.

Dryer balls are not as expensive as you might think.

Sometimes the washer finishes its cycle and leaves the fabric softener compartment full of water. The fact that the fabric softener has gone, and been replaced by water shows that the function has worked. The water is left behind due to a blockage, or a missing siphon tube.

How fabric softener compartment works

Here’s how it is flushed into the drum. The small fabric softener compartment in the soap dispenser drawer has a plastic cap or tube at the back. When the time comes for the softener (conditioner) to be released, cold water runs into the small compartment. This flushes the softener over the top and down the dispenser into the drum.

When the water flow has turned off the compartment is left momentarily full of water. This unwanted water should automatically siphon up the inside of the tube and into the drum. Siphoning is triggered when water, or the fabric softener spills over the top of the compartment.

What causes water to be left?

This tube often gets blocked by the fabric softener itself. If you remove the dispenser drawer and take off the cap or device you can give the whole thing a good clean out. (Can’t get the drawer out? See link at bottom of article). Make sure you clean through the hole in any tube leading through to the bottom of the drawer. If any part is missing, the siphoning will not occur.

To test the function, hold the soap drawer under a tap and allow water to fill the fabric compartment to overflowing. When you turn off the tap, hold the drawer steady and level. The remaining water should slowly siphon out of the hole under the cap and run out from the bottom of the drawer.

If everything is clean, and the water drains out ok when doing the above test, but there is still some water left in the fabric softener compartment at the end of the cycle then check the rest of this article for more ideas..

Still leaving water in softener compartment?

It shouldn’t be possible for the compartment to be left full of water if the compartment is cleaned and tested as described above. But if there’s only a small amount of water left inside try ensuring the washing machine is level and not tilting towards you. Make sure the washer is level across front to back as well as side to side.

The only other explanation I can think of is that stray water could be getting into the compartment after the fabric conditioner has been washed out – but not enough to fill to overflow which would start the siphoning process and remove it. If you suspect this check out this article for details about deflected water inside the soap dispenser – Fabric softener taken out too soon. You could also try adjusting the cold water pressure on the washing machine tap to see if it makes any difference.
